The first time you pull into a gun club, the place can feel like it has rules nobody bothered to write down. They exist — they're just lived rather than posted. Here's the cheat sheet.
Arriving and signing in
You'll turn off the road onto a gravel drive. The clubhouse — a low building with a counter inside and a board listing today's events — is the first thing you reach. Beyond it, a row of shooting fields stretches off to one side, all pointing the same direction. That direction is downrange. Everything on the property is laid out so the muzzles always point that way.
Leave your gun cased in the trunk for now and walk in empty-handed. Tell whoever is at the counter that you'd like to shoot a round and that it's your first time. You'll pay a small per-round fee and they'll put you on a squad — a group of up to five shooters who shoot together. If four people are already waiting, you'll join their squad. If not, you'll wait for one to form, or the club may pair you with a regular. Say yes if that's offered.
While you wait: get your gun out of the car, put on eye and ear protection, and let an experienced shooter give it a once-over. Hearing and eye protection are not optional. Wear them from the moment you step onto the field until you step off.
The field and the rotation
A field is a flat mowed area with a low building down at the far end — the trap house, where the machine that throws the clays sits. In front of it, an arc of five concrete pads marks the shooting positions, called posts, or stations.
The squad lines up in order, one shooter per post. Post one shoots first, then two, three, four, five — one shot each — and then it loops back to post one for the next bird. After five shots from each position, the squad rotates: every shooter moves one post to the right, and whoever was at post five walks behind the others around to post one. Repeat until everyone has shot from every post. That's a round — twenty-five birds total. The rotation feels formal the first time; after a round or two it's automatic.
What you'll hear
A round runs on a handful of short calls, and learning them is most of what makes you look like you've done this before.
"pull" is what you say when you're ready for the clay. Not "ready," not "go" — just pull. The person controlling the trap machine, the puller, is listening for that one word.
After the bird flies, the scorer stands behind the squad with a scorecard. If the target visibly breaks, the scorer is silent — a silent target is a hit. If you miss, you'll hear "Lost!" Sometimes the puller calls "Mark!" on a re-throw, or "No bird!" if the clay came out broken or on a bad angle — a no-bird gets re-thrown and you don't lose the shot.
Etiquette nobody will say out loud
A few habits the regulars all share. Once you've done them once or twice they stop feeling like rules.
The action stays open between stations. Your gun is loaded only when you're standing on your post and ready to call pull. Walking between stations, waiting your turn, watching another shooter — the action is open, the chamber visibly empty, and the muzzle pointed safely up or downrange. A gun off the field — on a rack, in your hands at the clubhouse — is always open and unloaded.
Don't load until you're on your post, and match the rest of the squad for how many shells go in.
The field goes quiet during a call. No commentary, no advice. Save it for between rotations.
End of the round
After the last bird, the scorer reads the totals out loud. Your score is the count of broken targets out of 25; a perfect round is called a straight. A new shooter who breaks in the low teens on their first round is doing fine — most regulars remember their own first round as worse.
You'll walk off the field together, guns open. The next squad will already be lining up. If you want another round, head back to the clubhouse and sign up again. Otherwise: case the gun, peel off the ear protection, and you've done it.
